Yi In Jwa's parents had been killed by King Sukjong. He planned to avenge the King and make him abdicate his throne. He set a lady-in-waiting to get the King's heart and became a concubine. The lady-in-waiting had been married before with an addicted gambler, Baek Man Geum. Through a trick, the King could win the woman and made her as his concubine. After married the King, Sookbin Choi delivered a baby only after 6 months. In order to save her baby, she asked Yi Soo to take the baby out of the palace. Yi Soo brought the baby to Baek Man Geum, Sookbin Choi's ex-husband. Baek Man Geum named him Dae Gil (Jang Geun Suk).
According to a shaman's premonition, Dae Gil would be a great king. Yi In Jwa would like to kill him but Dae Gil was born with a great luck so he could survive. Yi In Jwa proceeded his plan by approaching the Crown Prince, Yi Yoon. Sookbin Choi delivered another baby, Prince Yi Geum (Yeo Jin Goo). Prince Yi Geum knew that he had a brother but he didn't know that his brother was still alive. When they grew up, they met in a gambling place then they became friends.
After Yi Soo's death, Yi Soo's daughter, Dam Seo was taken care by Yi In Jwa. Dam Seo held a grudge towards the King because she thought that the King killed her father. Both Prince Yi Geum and Dae Gil had affection towards Dam Seo. They tried to protect her when she attempted to kill the King yet they try to make Dam Seo live peacefully.
King Sukjong died and the Crown Prince became a king, King Gyeongjong. King Gyeongjong didn't have any son so Prince Yi Geum was chosen to be the Crown Prince, the heir of the throne. This made controversy because Prince Yi Geum was the son of a lady-in-waiting. Even when King Gyeongjong died, the ministers suspected that he poisoned the King. Prince Yi Geum finally became a king, King Yeongjo.
Yi In Jwa keep proceeding his plan to replace the king. He chose Dae Gil to become king but Dae Gil didn't have any ambition to sit on the throne. Dae Gil helped King Yeongjo to stop Yi In Jwa's rebellion.
I really love this kind of movie. Less romance yet thrilling. The bond of brothers is stronger. Trust is the basic thing of the bond. This drama shows that love is not always about a relationship between a man with a woman. A love between family, friends can also be touching. This drama is inspired by the history issue. Compared to the history, the story plot quite approaching. Most of the characters and scenes are quite close to the history. Dae Gil's real name was Yeongsoo when he was born and the real Prince Yeongsoo died young. Dae Gil is a fictive character but he's lovable. I'll give two thumbs for the writer. b^^d
